What is Self Care?

Why does it matter?

These are the questions we will be exploring week by week with this blog.

There is absolutely NOTHING more important than self-care. This topic seems to be taboo for many people, especially women, because of the threat of being seen as selfish. I’m here to help dispel that rumor. If you are not taking care of yourself, there is no possible way for you to be able to take care of other people. It really is as simple and complex as that.

So what exactly does self-care look like? I think for so many this is formidable because there is no exact recipe for self care. Type in the words on Pinterest or Google and there will be a multitude of hits. One of the common things I see when I’m looking for inspiration is the fact that being HEALTHY is the glue that runs through the concept of self care. I don’t just mean healthy as in “drink more water and exercise” , (and Don’t get me wrong, I support a healthy lifestyle for all people. Do what you can to make yourself more healthy)– But this blog is more focused on the fact that self-care is essential to Mental Health.

As it says in my “About Me” post, I have suffered from depression and anxiety. While I am thankfully no longer in the throes of these diseases, I understand that many people still live in this darkness. If you are one of them, I am here for you. I’m not asking you to do anything that feels like too much and I’m happy that reading my blog is a step you can take. For right now —THAT IS ENOUGH, YOU ARE ENOUGH.
